An Inner Automorphism Is Only an Inner Automorphism, but an Inner Endomorphism Can Be Something Strange

چکیده

The inner automorphisms of a group G can be characterized within the category of groups without reference to group elements: they are precisely those automorphisms of G that can be extended, in a functorial manner, to all groups H given with homomorphisms G→ H. (Precise statement in §1.) The group of such extended systems of automorphisms, unlike the group of inner automorphisms of G itself, is always isomorphic to G. A similar characterization holds for inner automorphisms of an associative algebra R over a field K; here the group of functorial systems of automorphisms is isomorphic to the group of units of R modulo the units of K. If one looks at the above functorial extendibility property for endomorphisms, rather than just automorphisms, then in the group case, the only additional example is the trivial endomorphism; but in the K-algebra case, a construction unfamiliar to ring theorists, but known to functional analysts, also arises. Systems of endomorphisms with the same functoriality property are examined in some other categories; other uses of the phrase “inner endomorphism” in the literature, some overlapping the one introduced here, are noted; the concept of an inner derivation of an associative or Lie algebra is looked at from the same point of view, and the dual concept of a “co-inner” endomorphism is briefly examined. Several open questions are noted.

Classification of Lie Subalgebras up to an Inner Automorphism

In this paper, a useful classification of all Lie subalgebras of a given Lie algebraup to an inner automorphism is presented. This method can be regarded as animportant connection between differential geometry and algebra and has many applications in different fields of mathematics. After main results, we have applied this procedure for classifying the Lie subalgebras of some examples of Lie al...

Locally Inner Automorphisms of Operator Algebras

In this paper an automorphism of a unital C-algebra is said to be locally inner if on any element it agrees with some inner automorphism. We make a fairly complete study of local innerness in von Neumann algebras, incorporating comparison with the pointwise innerness of Haagerup-Størmer. On some von Neumann algebras, including all with separable predual, a locally inner automorphism must be inn...

ON CANONICAL CONSTRUCTIONS. Ill

In the first paper in this series a structure S was called canonically reconstructible from a structure T provided 5 was canonically isomorphic to a structure T' derived from T. The principle proposition of the paper was the scholium which asserted: If a structure 5 contains a substructure T and if S is canonically reconstructible from T, then every automorphism of T may be extended uniquely to...

n-INNER AUTOMORPHISMS OF FINITE GROUPS

We refer to an automorphism g of a group G as n-inner if given any subset S of G with cardinality less than n, there exists an inner automorphism of G agreeing with g on S. Hence g is 2-inner if it sends every element of G to a conjugate. New examples are given of outer n-inner automorphisms of finite groups for all natural numbers n ≥ 2.

On the eigenvector algebra of the product of elements with commutator one in the first Weyl algebra

Let A1 = K〈X,Y | [Y,X] = 1〉 be the (first) Weyl algebra over a field K of characteristic zero. It is known that the set of eigenvalues of the inner derivation ad(Y X) of A1 is Z. Let A1 → A1, X 7→ x, Y 7→ y, be a K-algebra homomorphism, i.e. [y, x] = 1. It is proved that the set of eigenvalues of the inner derivation ad(yx) of theWeyl algebra A1 is Z and the eigenvector algebra of ad(yx) is K〈x...
